Dr. Wilkerson recommends digital retinal imaging (DRI) on ALL patients. DRI is a type of medical imaging that uses a specialized camera to take a picture of the retina. Up to 200 degrees of the retina can be viewed at a single time without the use of dilation drops. By examining these photos, Dr. Wilkerson can identify potential problems like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachments and other retinal diseases.
For children, DRI is a great tool to establish a baseline for comparison in the event of retinal disease developing later in life as most conditions do not develop at a young age. Early detection and treatment of any retinal eye disease is the key for preserving your vision and preventing further damage.
The Maestro2 with OCTA is an advanced eye imaging instrument that takes detailed pictures and scans of the inside of your eye, including the retina. Unlike a regular eye exam, it lets Dr. Wilkerson see the individual layers of the retina beneath the surface of the eye. This allows for early detection of common eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
